I hope this finds you all well.
It’s obvious to say that, on all levels, it’s been a more difficult year than any of us could have predicted. After needing to take time off in 2019 due to family illness, I had hit the ground running making new work this year to make up for lost time, so it was a bit of a shock to head into another enforced period of introspective isolation.
Our Bullet Lives Blossom As They Race Toward The Wall
I decided I wasn’t going to stare into silence again, and instead tried to document what was going on outside, in doing so finding an entirely new way of working. The project, titled ‘Our Bullet Lives Blossom As They Race Toward The Wall’, featured as a work-in-progress on the BBC, the New Statesman and Huck.
Wood Work
It also led me to a slightly more niche project about a makeshift woodland gym that emerged on Hackney Marshes during lockdown. It was a strange shift: prior to that my only creative limitation had been the distances I could cover on my bike each day; now I was limited to shooting in a space the size of a living room, and there was a lot of time spent waiting for people to turn up.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF IRELAND
Sadly, the ‘Irish Horse’ exhibition at the National Gallery Of Ireland, two years in the making, and which had been due to feature several images from my jockey series, had to be cancelled due to lockdown. A minor sacrifice, given all that is going on, but it’s unfortunate that staff have been unable to see all their hard work bear fruit. I am happy to say that a smaller version of the show, “Reined In: Photographs from Irish Horse”, including several of my pictures, is now on display. Please take a look if you are in Dublin, and if not, here’s a link to the virtual exhibition of the show.
